Splinters. From the little ones to the big ones, they're a nasty business, particularly if you're a child (or squeamish adult).

Everybody remembers the sheer terror of a grown-up approaching your already throbbing finger with a big pair of tweezers. It's no wonder the mere thought of it is highly likely to send a kid into meltdown mode. I'm not sure why nobody told our parents this way back in the day, but there is another way to remove a splinter that doesn't involve poking around in a sore finger with a sharp metal object. All you need to solve the problem is some baking soda and water. Here's how to do it:
  • Mix a teaspoon of baking powder with a few drops of water until it forms a paste.
  • Apply the paste to the splinter.
  • Wait 10-20 minutes until the skin swells a little and the splinter pops out of the skin.
