Parents with children under the age of six can register them for free GP care from today. Almost 60 per cent of doctors in Ireland are estimated to have signed up for the new programme, with the service due to open on July 1, 2015. Children who already have a Medical Card or GP Visit Card will automatically be registered for this new scheme, but non-Medical Card holders must be registered. To register, parents need the child's PPS number, their own PPS number and contact details and the name of their selected GP. The card entitles children under the age of six to free GP visits and asthma care, as well as assessments at age two and five (age based preventive checks focused on health and wellbeing and prevention of disease).
