Irish stars have been sharing heartfelt tributes following the heartbreaking death of Michael Flatley’s wife, Niamh O’Brien, at the age of 52.

The dancer passed away peacefully at Dublin’s Beacon Hospital following a period of illness, with her family confirming the devastating news on Monday.

Michael, who was married to Niamh for 20 years, paid an emotional tribute to his wife on social media.

“My heart is broken. I have lost my beautiful wife, Niamh, and my best friend,” the Riverdance star wrote.

“My gorgeous bride of twenty years has gone to the Lord in Heaven. She was the most loving mother, wife and person, and our lives will never be the same without her.”

He also asked fans to keep Niamh, their son Michael St James and their family in their thoughts and prayers.

Following the announcement, a number of well-known Irish faces took to social media to share their condolences with the family.

Actress Victoria Smurfit wrote: “No! Michael I am so incredibly sorry to hear this shocking news. All love to you and your lad. She was a beauty inside and out.”

TV presenter Angela Scanlon added: “I’m so so sorry to hear this terrible news. Sending deepest condolences xx.”

Kathryn Thomas also shared her sympathies, writing: “I’m so so sorry. Such shocking news to hear. Your beautiful Niamh. Sending so much love to you and your family.”

Magician Keith Barry and former Ireland rugby captain Peter O’Mahony were also among those who sent messages of support.

Niamh, who was originally from Co Meath, was an accomplished Irish dancer who competed at an elite level before going on to perform professionally.

The couple married in 2006 and welcomed their only child, son Michael St James, in 2007.

A statement from the family described Niamh as a “deeply loved wife, mother, daughter, sister and friend” and said her loss would be “felt profoundly” by her loved ones.

Funeral arrangements will be announced in due course.
