A man who threw a two-month-old baby in the air "multiple times" has been sentenced to 13 months in prison.

The infant was found to have multiple fractures to his leg and broken ribs when he was taken to hospital after appearing unwell. The BBC reports that Liam Simpson had thrown the baby in the air, believing that the child was "amused" by what was happening. The 22-year-old from Scotland has learning difficulties, had ADHD, and a "difficult upbringing." Simpsons' defence, Bert Kerrigan said that the case was "wholly exceptional" and that his client should not be given a prison sentence. He said:
"His conduct did not result in visible injuries and I think it can properly said on his behalf that he did not appreciate the damage that was being caused to the child. "He thought the child was being amused by what he was doing, little realising that he was causing the child injury."
Simpson has no previous convictions and will be monitored following the 12 months after his release.
