Irish parents warned over popular meat products after recall due to illness

Irish households are being advised to bin a number of lunch meat products after a recall was published by the Food Safety Authority.

In the notice, published on Tuesday July 25th, FSAI officials warned that: “Dale Meats is recalling all batches of cooked whole ham, sliced ham, sliced hazlett and sliced corned beef due to the presence of Listeria monocytogenes.” Consumers are warned not to eat the implicated batches, which are as follows: All batch codes; All use-by-dates up to 19/08/2023 [caption id="attachment_431838" align="alignnone" width="162"]

Credit: FSAI[/caption] The recall notice went on to advise of the symptoms associated with Listeria monocytogenes infection, so that people can keep an eye out if they have consumed any of the contaminated meat. They can include “mild flu-like symptoms, or gastrointestinal symptoms such as nausea, vomiting and diarrhoea. In rare cases, the infection can be more severe, causing serious complications.” There are a number of groups who would be considered ”more vulnerable to Listeria monocytogenes infections,” the warning states. These include pregnant women, babies, and people with weakened immune systems, including the elderly. The incubation period - the time between initial infection and first symptoms appearing - is on average 3 weeks but can range between 3 and 70 days.
