Irish homeowners, particularly in the Athlone region, are being warned about a tradesman who is going door-to-door offering his help.

This warning comes after an elderly woman was conned out of €600 after a builder called to her door and told her that she needed work done on her roof. According to Shannonside, she paid the money in advance and although the builder started the work he left it unfinished and is not contactable anymore. Sergeant Andrew Haran at Athlone Garda Station commented on the issue,
"We'd really be encouraging people not to consider a caller who would come in unannounced and suggest that work is necessary. We'd be saying don't deal with people who call without an appointment. Don't let them in without verifying that they are legitimate and if they have any concerns about that ring the Gardaí. You could take a business card without opening the front door."
