An announcement is expected to made later today.

The government will introduce further Covid-19 restrictions today. The Cabinet will meet today to confirm new restrictions for the entire country in a bid to spread the curb of coronavirus. Currently, Donegal, Cavan, and Monaghan are under Level 4 restrictions and the rest of the country is under Level 3. RTÉ News reports that the new restrictions will be comprised of elements from both Level 4 and Level 5 from their Living With Covid Plan. It is expected the restrictions will involve the closure of most shops, as well as gyms and other amenities. New measures could also further restrict travel, which is already limited to within county lines. Minister for Higher Education Simon Harris confirmed yesterday that tighter restrictions would be introduced for the country today. Speaking on yesterday's RTÉ’s This Week in Politics, he said: “I want people to know that the government will act tomorrow. The action will be decisive. “It’s clear now that the virus is at such a level within all our communities that the county-by-county approach is not sufficient." Yesterday the Department of Health was notified of  1,283 new cases and three further deaths. The death toll currently stands at 1,852. One third of yesterday's recorded cases came from Dublin. Cavan continues to have the highest Covid rate in the country.
