Gardaí receive a number of calls following Baby Maria appeal

Gardaí have received a number of phone calls after an appeal for information on the mother of a baby abandoned in Dublin on Friday. The baby, who carers have named Maria, is believed to have been less than 36 hours old when she was discovered, wrapped in a blanket and bin liner and placed in a Marks & Spencers bag, on Steelstown Road. Despite the calls, Gardaí have said they are baffled as to why the child's mother would choose this particular location as a place to leave a child. One Garda officer said:

“It’s not somewhere you’d abandon a child if you wanted someone to find it and it’s also not the kind of place you’d leave her if you didn’t want people to find her. It’s baffling,”

A number of items found near the baby were displayed at a press conference yesterday. If no information is forthcoming, a television appeal may follow in the coming days.
