Family of five rescued from burning boat on Lough Derg

The family did not sustain any major injuries.

A family of five has been rescued from a burning boat on Lough Derg. Members of the public, the Irish Coast Guard, and RNLI lifeboat members helped save the family who was on board the boat when it caught fire. A mayday call was issued on Sunday afternoon when the 38ft cruiser went up in flames. It is believed the boat was near Castle Harbour at the time. Firefighters managed to put out the main fire at 1.30 pm. Speaking about the incident, Lough Derg RNLI deputy Aoife Kennedy said: "Always be alert to the dangers of fire on a boat. And always carry a means of communication so that you can call the emergency services for help." The public has been urged to be cautious as temperatures continue to soar throughout the week. Met Éireann even issued a high-temperature advisory for the week ahead. "Continuing very warm until Friday, with daytime temperatures into the high twenties and very humid at night with temperatures staying in the mid to high teens."
